No, AI Won’t Create as Many Jobs as It’s About to Destroy

The comforting story about automation is familiar: machines destroy some jobs, create better ones, and leave society richer. We heard it about factories, computers, and the internet. Now we hear it about generative AI: relax — the jobs will return in better form. Maybe. But this time may be different. AI is not merely helping workers perform existing tasks. It can increasingly handle the language, coding, search, scheduling, reporting, and support work that underpins modern white-collar employment. The IMF estimates that almost 40% of jobs worldwide are exposed to AI, rising to about 60% in advanced economies. The ILO puts generative-AI exposure at one in four jobs globally and one in three in high-income countries. In the U.S., Brookings estimates that more than 30% of workers could see at least half their tasks disrupted. AI is also spreading unusually fast. Stanford reports that generative AI reached 53% population adoption within three years, while the share of EU enterprises using AI rose from 13.5% in 2024 to 20% in 2025. This is not a gradual, decades-long transition. It is a rapid push into administration, customer support, software, analysis, marketing, HR, and operations.
